Day 1 - Arrive Siem ReapWhether you arrive by plane, boat or bus for this Siem Reap travel module, there will be plenty of tuk-tuk drivers waiting to pick you up. Let them take you to your hotel the Cambodian way for only a few US Dollars. Your hotel is in the centre of town where spacious air-conditioned rooms and friendly staff will be waiting for you. Would you prefer a pick up instead? Please let us know, as we can arrange it for you in advance. On the first day of this Siem Reap travel module, you will probably take it a bit easy after your travels. Perhaps try a nice Khmer dish at the hotel or walk into the city and visit a local restaurant. The centre is not very big, and is quite charming with little streets and small cafes. In the evening you could visit the night markets. It is a touristy spot, but be sure to have a good hunt around and there are plenty of good souvenirs to take home with you. |

Day 2: Angkor - excursion with guideOn the second day of this Siem Reap travel module you'll visit the Angkor Wat temple complex with a guide. In order to see the entire complex, you would need to spend several days here since the dozens of temples are spread out over an area of about 25 square kilometres. Wander endlessly through the statues, temples and historic reliefs, but be sure to stay on the defined and marked paths, as there are still mines in some of the unchartered areas. The temples were built in various time periods with each ruler building his own temple. Because of this, each temple has its own character; the most famous temple, Angkor Wat, features Hindu influences while the Angkor Thom temple features Buddhist influences. After a day of cultural exploration, you'll spend another night in your hotel in Siem Reap. |
Day 3: Siem Reap - day at leisure
Day 3 of your Siem Reap travel module is at your leisure. Many travellers return to the Angkor Temple Complex independently to explore further. Angkor is the name of the ancient capital of the powerful Khmer empire that was established during the 8th century. Later the Thai ruled this territory during the Siamese empire and introduced many Buddhist influences. "Siem Reap" literally means "victory by Siam". It was very generous of the Khmer to allow the city to keep its name. The temples were once surrounded by a lively city full of wooden houses; unfortunately the houses did not stand the test of time, however the temples alone are still an impressive sight. For centuries this city was covered by jungle until a French expedition discovered the ruins early in the 1900's and many of the temples have since been restored but several others still show how the jungle swallowed the temples from sight. The Ta Prohm temple is one which has not yet been completely restored and it's quite interesting to see how towering trees have taken the temple prisoner. Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 4: Siem Reap - end of moduleAfter your breakfast in the morning, this Siem Reap travel module ends. If you want to explore Angkor a little bit further, we're happy to extend this module with an extra night. If you have more time to spend in Cambodia, you can travel by boat along the Tonle Sap Lake to the capital Phnom Penh. Here you will find out more about the country's culture and turbulent history and it's also the getaway point to Vietnam and Laos as well.Do you feel more like relaxing on an idyllic beach instead? Travel then via Battambang, Cambodia's third largest city, to Ko Chang. After a nice, relaxed stay you can easily go to Bangkok and fly from there back to Australia. |
